For 6th grader Elijah, this summer brought something brand new: his first overnight camp experience. Heading into the week, he wasn’t quite sure what it would be like. But with each new activity and experience, those nerves quickly turned into excitement and anticipation. By the end of the week, he felt right at home.
“I’ve never been to an overnight camp before, so I wasn’t sure what it would be like, but I’m having so much fun!”
One of Elijah’s favorite ways to spend time at Camp has been playing Gaga Ball. Every day, he found himself diving into the game ready to go. It soon became more than just a fun activity but a place to build friendships too.
“My favorite activity has been Gaga Ball. I play it every day and even made a friend from another cabin while playing.”
Beyond the fun and games, Elijah also experienced meaningful spiritual growth. Through Bible studies and cabin time, he was reminded that God is with him no matter what. Even in moments when he feels uncertain or alone, he’s learned he can turn to the Lord. It’s a truth he plans to carry home with him.
“This week I learned that God is always with me, even when I feel alone or unsure. That’s something I’ll remember when I go back home.”
Elijah also found a sense of belonging in his cabin. With outgoing and energetic counselors and a group of guys who made each other laugh, cabin time was full of bonding moments. Whether they were going down the zipline or tackling chores, everyday there were opportunities to connect and develop a strong friendship.
“Our cabin is awesome. Everyone’s really funny and our counselor is the best! He makes everything feel exciting, even Pretty Potty.”
Campers spend their time at Cho-Yeh electronic free so that they can be fully immersed into everything Camp has to offer and experience the character and spiritual growth God wants for them. Plus, between the activities, cabin moments, and learning more about God, most campers don’t think twice about their devices back home! Camp gave Elijah the chance to be fully present and he didn’t want to miss a thing.
“I thought it would be hard not having my phone, but I’ve been so busy having fun I haven’t even missed it.”
Elijah’s experience is the perfect reminder of why Camp Cho-Yeh exists. Through meaningful relationships and outdoor adventures, Elijah was able to have a blast while also deepening his faith and learning lessons that will go with him far beyond the summer.
